Today is October 3rd, and it’s officially Day Against DRM.
I urge all of you that read my site to go out and talk about DRM with your friends and family, explain what DRM is and how it limits your freedom.
Contrary to what others would want you to believe, DRM is not just a simple copy-protection scheme. It’s a mechanism installed in mainstream multimedia software and hardware, designed to protect record companies and movie companies, and hurt you as a user. Why shouldn’t you have the right to play legally purchased music on as many different MP3 players as you like? Why shouldn’t you have the right to burn the music on a CD, and play it in your CD or DVD player? Why shouldn’t you have the right to have your music be truly portable and available to you at all times?
Today is the day when everyone should go out and talk against DRM. My friends and I have already talked about DRM to people we do and don’t know, our families and less tech-savvy friends. We have explained why DRM is counter-productive and why people should be really careful about what they purchase.
There are a number of things you can do to aid the struggle against DRM - but the best thing you can do is educate as many people as possible about what DRM really is. Spreading the truth and the real information about DRM is the best way to attack it, because people cannot be against something they do not truly understand.
