A quote.

“With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”

The first day..

Posted Monday, February 20th 2006

Something feels a bit strange. Today is the first day, of the last semester of formal education I’ll have. It just feels a bit strange.

Anyway, it’s a great day outside. Loads of sunshine & it’s quite warm too. So I think I’ll get ready and go for a walk. Letting such a great day go to waste would be a bit stupid.

Song of the moment: Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderfull World.

Big news..

On February 14th 2006, my brother became a father, and I became an uncle. Somewhere around 6:55 pm on Valentine’s day, little Ian came to this world, and largely contributed to it being a better place.

Welcome to the world Ian, I’m sure you’ll love it.

Congratulations to my brother and his wife. I wish you both all the best, and I know that your son will grow up to be very happy and loved, because I know that you two will be the best parents ever.
Recap from Athens due… When I get around to writing it.

Train Trippin’…

Posted Friday, February 10th 2006

It’s 5:34 am, and I’ve been up for well over half an hour. I don’t usually get up this early - not unless I really have to. The main reason behind my unusual endevor of getting up this insanely early is because I’ve got to be ready, and not miss my train to Athens at 7:40 am - which I think should not be a problem, as I’m never late.
In fact, I’m so anal about not being late anywhere, I’m usualy there early. And wait for everyone that’s late. Seriouly though, I’m going to Athens for a few days. Should be quite interesting.

Anyway.. I was going to have the latest issue of Car magazine with me, but it’s not out (here) yet, so I’ll have to manage with last month’s. Bugger. Good issue though - should keep me busy for at least an hour or two.

Roughly 6 hours of train ride, here I come.. I wish I had a 80 foot giant robot from the future.

10 Years of Cyberspace Independence

Posted Thursday, February 9th 2006

On February 8th 1996, John Perry Barlow declared the Independence of Cyberspace. It’s not exactly a revolutionary date, and hardly a date most people would have remembered, but a friend of mine passed me the link, and I recalled reading the declaration a few years ago.
It’s actually a very interesting text - and everyone should read it - it will provide at least some insight about what we are actually trying to do - albeit this is quite an old text.

You are terrified of your own children, since they are natives in a world where you will always be immigrants. Because you fear them, you entrust your bureaucracies with the parental responsibilities you are too cowardly to confront yourselves. In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.
That’s just a part of it, and it’s actually sad to see how much of what the author speaks against in his text has actually come true. Imposed regulations, rules and benchmarks, all supposedly “for our own benefit and protection” suffocate the Internet before our very eyes. Various governing bodies wage a diplomatic war over who will be in control, and giant corporations limit our very freedom of information in order to protect their products.

10 years have passed. Seems like eternity.
