Lack of.. things.

Posted Saturday, January 21st 2006

Thus far, the weekend has been rather unconstructive. I spent most of today in front of the computer, doing meaningless things. It was a great day, very sunny and warm, so I had the balcony door open for a few hours - my room needed some fresh air. Infact, one could easily feel the lack of oxygen in the room.

I spent some time tinkering with my graphics card drivers - and some odd things were happening. I’m not entirely satisfied with ASUS support - although their products are top notch. So updating the drivers was a bit of a hit and miss scenario, but luckily, everything came out smooth in the end. Hopefully. I’ll see over the next few days.

Melancholy is setting in again. I really can’t wait for exams to be over - they bring out the worst in me. I lash out at people, I don’t sleep well and I constantly feel pressured - although I know I’m not.

Song of the moment: NIN - We’re in this together

Zombies..

Posted Wednesday, January 18th 2006

There is something so truly satisfying about a good zombie movie. I just finished watching Dawn Of The Dead - for the 2nd time - and it’s truly a blast. Something about good, messy violence is so satisfying - it probably has something to do with the inner human psyche - we can’t satisfy our agressive urges in legal/moral ways, so movies will have to do - as a vent of some sort.

For those that like zombie movies, I must insist that you see Shaun Of The Dead - another great movie, and it’s a huge laugh to boot. Check it out.

Had my first exam today - networks - and all went well. Actually, it was somewhat easier that I had expected, so it went pretty smooth. Two exams left - advanced databases on the 24th, and software development on the 30th. After that, I’ve got a couple of weeks off until the 2nd semester starts. Not sure what exactly I’ll do, but I’ll think of something.

In other news, I got a new keyboard. A Microsoft Ergo 4000. Great keyboard, but it’s been a while since I’ve used an ergonomic keyboard, so it’s still a bit odd. I’ll get used to it though, and I’ll write a full review of it once I do.

Exams..

Posted Sunday, January 15th 2006

I hate this part of my studies - exams. Well Everyone hates exams, but I feel so unproductive during exams. I don’t feel like studying at all, and although I do, it’s a bit blah. I don’t have any problems whatsoever working on assignments, projects, group projects, doing research etc. But when I actually have to study - I lose all motivation to do anything.

I have three exams. On wednesday (the 18th) I have networks, then on tuesday (the 24th) I have databases, and then the following monday (the 30th) I have software development. The networks exam is the one I’m most worried about, because of the sheer amount of material. The other two are quite hard aswell, but overall easier to deal with. Though, the software development exam does have a lot about design patterns, and that’s somewhat tricky.

Actually, when I have to study and I get nervous and stressed, I clean my room. So my room is all clean and tidy now. A bit odd too, because generally I love having somewhat of a creative chaos atmosphere around me. That, and I’m usualy too lazy to tidy up.

Recap of 2005..

Posted Sunday, January 8th 2006

When trying to put 2005 in perspective, I’m a bit blown away by the sheer number of things that have happened to me, good or not. I try to keep a positive and optimistic attitude towards pretty much everything, and in retrospective, 2005 was not a bad year. I’m actually quite happy with how everything turned out.

I mean, I graduated, for fucks sake. I officialy hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. It’s a huge thing for me, and a bit scary. It just feels.. humongous! And right now, I’m attending postgraduate studies to get my MSc in Software Engineering & Telecommunications, and everything is going pretty good. I’m a bit amazed - who’da thought?

I got to intern at a software development company, and I met some great people while there. There’s a good chance I might work there in the future, and I’d be pretty happy there.

New Year’s was pretty good. It didn’t go exactly as planned, but pretty good nonetheless. Me and a few of my closest friends at my place, enjoying some drinks and food, then off to a very good drum n bass party, and then off to find my girlfriend. Again, not exactly as I would have wanted it to happen, but pretty good.

I learned a lot this year. I learned a lot about people and a whole lot about myself. A lot of people helped with that along the way, and I’m gratefull to all of them.

My brother got married, and he and his wife are expecting a kid. A boy!

On a slightly sadder note, my older cat, Tippy, died at the age of 17. Her death was devastating, although she did live a happy life. She’s gone, but never forgotten.

I also crashed the car, but managed to walk out completely unharmed. Car’s been fixed since. My ego is still slightly bruising.

One of the best things to happen was meeting Ema. She’s made things so much better for me. I miss you E!
