Road Trip!

Posted Friday, September 23rd 2005

A friend of mine had to move to Athens in order to continue his studies there - he’s going for a postgraduate degree from the Athens Institute of Technology. So, a few friends and myself decided to go on a road trip, to help the guy move and to have some fun in-between.

We left at something like 9 am. Athens is about 550 km away, so it was a good drive. The drive there was quite relaxing and uneventful. However, once we reached Athens, things changed. For those that don’t know, Athens is effin’ huge. Took us about an hour and a half of driving around to find the university and the dorms. The university btw is awesome, but somewhat unsettling. It’s too perfect. Clean, high-tech, and everyone is beyond nice. It’s a bit like Xavier’s School For The Gifted. Or one of those movies you see when the high school is apparently great, but then there’s something devious going on in the background, the students are getting brain implants, and are being prepared to take over the world via any means necessary. Still, an awesome place. We grabbed some food there too.

After we settled the guy into his room and saying even more oohs and aahs at how good the place is, we decided to grab some beers by the sea in Athens. We met up with a friend that lives there, and she took us to a great Irish pub, where the Guinness was flowing from the skies and the atmosphere was great. We drank said Guinness, and at a point we decided to get back to the dorms. The university people were nice enough to put us up for the night, so we don’t have to go to a hotel.

As we left the pub, a thunderstorm was brewing, so we hustled to the car and got back to the dorms, where we watched Robin Williams stand-up comedy and drank beer. Many laughs ensued. I didn’t really sleep too well (or at all) for a number of reasons, but most of them good. A lot of good things happened.

Next morning we got up and left around 9. Dropped the friend off, and we were on our merry way. Took us over an hour to get out of Athens though, and we knew the way. The drive back was somewhat boring, but music fixed that. We stopped a couple of times, once to grab some breakfast, and once to grab some Red Bull. When I got home, I had a shower, and promptly passed out.

A great trip. Wish it would have lasted longer.

To E: Miss you b.
